The “Miracle of Bern” is the name given to the victory of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland by the German national soccer team against the highly favored national team of Hungary. The final match, which ended in a 3:2 victory for Germany, took place on July 4, 1954 in Bern’s Wankdorf Stadium in front of 60,000 spectators. The players led by captain Fritz Walter and national coach Sepp Herberger went down in German sports history as the “Heroes of Bern”.

But what is the connection with Spiez?  During the 1954 World Cup, the German national team stayed at the Hotel Belvédère in Spiez. This is where the Miracle of Bern took its start, all the way to winning the World Cup title. Even today, a beautiful glass plaque commemorates the “Miracle of Bern” with the players and the lineup of the winning German National Team. The commemorative plaque is located on the right side of the terrace with a magnificent view of the bay of Spiez. The absolute selfie spot.
